LMS – Fun with Blackboard Adaptive Release

Blackboard adaptive release

What is “adaptive release” and how can we make the most of it?

Adaptive release is a feature in Blackboard Learn that allows you to release content based upon the criteria you set. The criteria are called “Rules” and they can be related to dates and times; viewing, completing or passing other items, belonging to groups and much more. Adaptive release gives you total control over what students see and access. And this can be anywhere within a module, even another folder!

So how do we have “fun” with adaptive release? By making students complete something before they can access something else!

Example: Setting a 100% Badge for a Micro (or other assignment)

Though you can assign any score to any file, in this example a special badge will appear if the student scores 100% on a Micro package (link). This is most effective when there is only one attempt at the assessment; if students are allowed multiple attempts the badge will appear/disappear with each new attempt until 100 is reached again.

Blackboard has a nifty Course Tool called “Achievements”, and if you have this you can use it to set your achievement badges. However not everyone has this turned on in their LMS so here’s a way to make your own badges appear with Adaptive Release.

Step 1: Download or create a 100% badge.

Step 2: Go to the content area or folder and upload your badge(s).

  1. Build Content (or Add Content) > File (or Image)
  2. Name the badge and upload it.
  3. Submit.

Step 3: Upload the Micro

  1. Build Content (or Add Content) > Content Package (SCORM).
  2. Select the Micro from your computer or content collection. Submit.

Step 4: Attach the 100% Badge to the Micro

  1. Once it’s uploaded, right–click the chevron next to its title and choose “Adaptive Release”. Go about halfway down to “Grade” and select the Grade Centre column containing your Micro. Tick “Score” “Equal to” and type in 100. Choose Submit. Now when they achieve 100% on the Micro, the 100% badge will appear!
  2. Move the 100% badge above the Micro. (It looks better on top!)

If you would like students to receive a “badge” for simply completing the Micro, you can do that, too.

Step 1: Download or create a Complete Badge

Step 2: Go to the content area or folder and upload your badge(s).

Step 3: Once it’s uploaded, right–click the chevron next to its title and choose “Adaptive Release”. Go about halfway down to “Grade” and select the Grade Centre column containing your Micro. Instead of selecting “Score” and “Equal to”, select the “User has at least one attempt for this item” (which is the default Select Condition). Once this is selected and attached to the Micro, whenever a student makes a full attempt (completes) it, the Complete badge will show.

You can have as many badges as you like attached to the Micro.

Badges are just one way to have fun with adaptive release.
