Installing & Using the BLENDING EDUCATION Microlearning Library App in Canvas

These are instructions for setting up the free Blending Education App in your Instructure Canvas LMS. The free App contains hundreds of free resources from every course. If you would like to purchase any courses or the entire library, please visit https://blending.education/app to get institutional pricing information.

Once you install the free Blending Education App, the free lessons and any courses you have purchased will automatically appear.

There are 3 steps to installing the BLENDING EDUCATION App in Canvas.

STEP 1: CREATE YOUR CLIENT ID
Create your Developer Key and Client ID in Canvas (Administrator) & supply it to BLENDING EDUCATION

The free BLENDING EDUCATION App must be added to your Canvas on an institutional level. You must first create a Developer Key, then supply us with your generated Client ID. You can then install the BLENDING EDUCATION App and start using it once we have verified your Client ID.

1) As an Administrator, choose Admin > Developer Keys

2) Choose + Developer Key, then + LTI Key

3) Use following Key Settings:

Under Configure > Method, select Enter URL from the drop-down menu.

In the JSON URL field, enter: https://ltiaas.blending.space/register/canvas

Key Name: Your Institution Name

Owner Email: Your Email

Redirect URIs: Enter both of these URLs, on separate lines:

https://ltiaas.blending.space

https://ltiaas.blending.space/

Choose Save. This will create your Developer Key with your Client ID.

4) In the State column, choose ON to turn your Developer Key ON. Copy your Client ID. Just copy the numerical ID shown under ‘Details’ (don’t choose ‘Show Key’) and email it to sales@blending.education, along with your name, institution name, Canvas URL, and phone number. We will contact you as soon as we add your Client ID to our Library. You can then add the BLENDING EDUCATION App to your courses using your Client ID and start using the free lessons (and courses or the full library if you have purchased it).

STEP 2: INSTALL THE BLENDING EDUCATION APP
Add the BLENDING EDUCATION App to your Institution (Administrator)

Once you create your Client ID and send it to us, we will add you to our platform. You’ll then receive confirmation from us, and you can install the BLENDING EDUCATION App on the institutional level as an Administrator:

1) Choose Admin > Settings

2) Choose Apps

3) Choose View App Configurations

4) Choose + App

Under Configuration Type, choose By Client ID from the drop-down list.
Enter your Client ID from Step 1.
Choose Submit.

The BLENDING EDUCATION App is now available in your system.

STEP 3: ADD RESOURCES FROM THE BLENDING EDUCATION APP
Add BLENDING EDUCATION App Resources to a Course in Canvas (Teacher)

1) In your course in Canvas, add a new Assignment: Select Assignments then + Assignment

2) Enter the following settings:

Assignment Name: Enter the name of your assignment.

Add a description (optional).

Change the Points value to 100.

In Submission Type, choose External Tool from the drop-down list.

Select the Find button, and then choose the BLENDING EDUCATION App.The Resource Selector appears. You can select a resource or search for resources in the search box.

Select the resource you want, then choose Select.

Choose the Select button again.

Submission attempts: All resources allow just one attempt, regardless of how many attempts you specify here. If you would like students to have more attempts, then you can add additional instances of the resource (repeat steps 1 and 2).

Choose Save or Save and Publish.

The resource is now added to your course, and a grades column is created! Grades will automatically appear once students have completed the lesson.

What is the BLENDING EDUCATION App?
The BLENDING EDUCATION Microlearning Library App is an online learning repository that contains thousands of self-grading microlearning lessons that you can use instantly in your course in your LMS. Aligned with OpenStax, you can choose from lessons in Science, Math, Social Sciences, Humanities, Student Success, Business, Law, and AP® & more.

What is the difference between the BLENDING EDUCATION App and subscribing to a course in the BLENDING SPACE?
Courses purchased through our shop are discounted and licensed for teachers. The BLENDING EDUCATION App contains lessons from all of our courses and is licensed for the entire institution. Lessons are accessed individually through the institution’s LMS and added to courses. Neither teachers nor students need to create accounts/log in. The App is a yearly subscription licensed on an institutional level, and allows every teacher within the institution access to unlimited individual lessons to use and re-use in unlimited courses and with unlimited students.

For hosted BLENDING SPACE courses, teachers can purchase an individual subscription to any course for $199 per year, and use the single course with all of their classes.  Courses are for teachers who want a ready-to-use course for just their own classes. Both teachers and students will create an account and log in to the hosted BLENDING SPACE.

Is the BLENDING EDUCATION App really free? What is the cost to students?
You can install and use the App absolutely free! There are hundreds of free lessons that you can use without purchasing a subscription to the library or courses. There is no cost to students, and you can use all of the lessons with unlimited students throughout your institution.

Where can I install the BLENDING EDUCATION App?
Institutions can install the App in any LMS that accepts LTI 1.3 Advantage external tools: Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, D2L Brightspace, Sakai, and others.
Currently, Schoology and Google Classroom do not support LTI 1.3 yet, but when they do the App will work with them.

I’m a teacher, how do I get courses through the App?
Ask your institution to install the App and contact us for pricing.

How do I purchase Courses, Packages or the Library?
Please contact us for institutional pricing. If you are a teacher, you can purchase a subscription to any course in the Shop.

 

TROUBLESHOOTING

ERROR MESSAGES

  1. EDU APP CENTER: There was an error processing your request. The BLENDING EDUCATION Microlearning Library App has been created with the latest LTI1.3 Advantage tool. The Edu App Center only installs the old LTI1.1 version of Apps, and has no plans to upgrade their service to the new standard. Therefore, you must install our App manually. Please follow the instructions above.
  2. Error message after installing the App: {“status”:400,”error”:”Bad Request”,”details”:{“message”:”UNREGISTERED_PLATFORM”}}
    After installing the App, this error message will appear until we register you. To use the App, you must supply us with your Client ID so that we can register your institution on our Platform. This is normal. Once we register you, you’ll be able to use the App immediately. Please contact sales@blending.education or support@blending.education with your name, institution, Canvas URL, and phone number to register, or for more information.
  3. Self-hosted (open source) versions of Canvas that aren’t hosted through Instructure cannot support our tool. This is because Instructure doesn’t currently allow you to create unique Developer Keys in self-hosted versions of Canvas. Without a unique developer key, it is impossible to register your tool. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.
